I received this message today from Jason:
Excited to track your progress! I need to find a way to coach my mom towards a similar weight loss approach. Any ideas?
Here is my response:
Well… let’s first understand that this is a little bit like asking an alcoholic to quit drinking – The alcoholic needs to make the decision to change. So how do we help your mother make the decision? One way might be to sit down with her and work together to make a list of how her life will be better if she loses weight. Maybe this process would help her see the advantages of losing weight.
Next, she may have been discouraged by attempts she has made in the past to lose weight, and they didn’t work. So it may seem impossible. One reason I am documenting everything on YouTube is so that other people can see a plan that really does work, and watch as the weight loss unfolds for a real person. This page lays it out:
Hope this helps!
Here in my week 3 status report I lost 4.4 more pounds, for a total of 17.5 pounds in 3 weeks – it feels great!
One thing I talk about this week is motivation, and the things that have kept me motivated for 3 weeks straight. I also talk about the little wins in week 3, like… I wore jeans for the first time in a year! Want to join me? Here is the plan:
In the last 3 weeks a miracle has happened in my weight loss and dieting journey – I am actually able to control my eating and lose weight consistently. I have lost 17.5 pounds in 3 weeks. So what happened? Take a look at this graph:
The answer is that I started a low-carb diet. A low-carb diet really helps me by cutting my appetite and my cravings. This lets me start to control my eating, and I am able to maintain a calorie deficit. This is a prelude, to help you understand some of the benefits of low-carb diets. Want to get started? Here in my week 2 status report, I lost 4 more pounds! So I have lost 13 pounds in 2 weeks, and it feels really good!
One thing discussed in this video is weight “bubbles”, in particular, one day where I gained more than a pound on the scale for no reason. These bubbles can be discouraging, especially if they last for several days, but if you can get into the habit of ignoring them and staying on track, everything works out if you are running a consistent calorie deficit.
This video is a quick introduction to food diaries, and why you want to start using one. I show you how to get started, how I use my food diary, what it looks like to use a food diary every day, etc. It only takes a couple of minutes per day, and you will learn SO MUCH about yourself. Give it a try!
My doctor prompted this video, when he basically told me I am an idiot for becoming so fat (in my case, 100 pounds overweight). When I think about all of the downsides of being this obese, it really makes me wonder: “Am I insane?” So this video brings this question to life:
This is week one of my weight loss journey, and it has been fantastic – I lost 9 pounds in 1 week! In future videos we will go into detail on each technique, so you have all of the information you need to do it yourself.
There are now 3 videos available at MBthin.

The second video helps you admit to your weight problem and commit to solving it by posting your Goal Sheet:
The third video shows you my starting point at 260 pounds, about 100 pounds overweight. You are encouraged to document your starting point as well:
